Uber Eats commission in Australia: what 30% really costs your restaurant

Most Australian restaurants on Uber Eats pay around 30% on delivery orders. Here is how that number works, what it costs over a year, and how to keep your delivery without it.

How the commission works

Uber Eats charges the restaurant a percentage of each order's food total. On the full delivery plan that is typically 30%, depending on your agreement. The customer also pays a service fee (10% of the order, $1 to $4) and a delivery fee.

So on an $87 order the restaurant pays $26.10 and receives $60.90, before food cost, packaging and staff.

What it adds up to

At 300 delivery orders a month with an average order around $80, a 30% commission is roughly $7,000 a month, more than $80,000 a year. For many venues that is more than their rent.

Keep the drivers, drop the commission

You don't have to give up delivery. With your own app, customers order from you and the same Uber drivers deliver through Uber Direct, billed per trip ($10 + $1.10/km ex GST) instead of a percentage of the order.

The restaurant sets its own in-store prices, the customer usually pays less, and you keep the whole order.

Move your regulars first

Keep Uber Eats for discovery, and move the customers who already know you. A flyer in every bag, a QR code at the counter and points on the first app order are enough to start. The simulator shows what each moved order is worth on your own menu.
